HOT NEWS: Quarterback Shuffle: Darnold’s Departure and the 49ers’ Backup Plan
It was just one match, but its value seemed to be around $10 million. When the 49ers signed Sam Darnold as quarterback a year ago, the anticipation was that he might need to step in for some games early on while Brock Purdy recovered from elbow surgery, serving as a reliable backup. However, Purdy was fully recovered by the end of training camp and played all 16 games for the 49ers.
Darnold didn’t start until the season finale, which was essentially a meaningless game against the Rams. He performed well initially, with the 49ers taking a 20-7 lead, but when the top offensive players were rested in the second half, the team struggled, resulting in a 21-20 loss. Darnold’s performance, completing 16 of 26 passes for 189 yards and a rushing touchdown, with a quarterback rating of 96.5, caught the attention of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Vikings, in need of quarterback assistance after missing out on Kirk Cousins, are set to sign Darnold to a one-year deal worth $10 million. This move comes after Darnold’s stint with the Jets failed to meet expectations, but he showed improvement during his time with the Panthers.
With Darnold’s departure, the 49ers’ quarterback room behind Purdy faces uncertainty. Third-stringer Brandon Allen, who received a one-year contract extension, may step into the backup role, though his experience is limited.
The 49ers could explore options in the draft or wait for free agency to bolster their depth at quarterback.
