“Saints Gear Up for Talks with Ex-Commanders Player and 49ers Pass Rusher”
Former Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Chase Young is set to meet with the New Orleans Saints this week, as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Young, who was the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is drawing significant interest in the market, according to Pelissero.
Young is expected to ink a one-year contract, aiming to prove his value and durability to teams across the league. The deal would serve as a chance for Young to demonstrate his ability to stay healthy for a full season and justify a salary comparable to the top edge rushers in the league. Spotrac estimates the contract to be worth $13 million for one year.
For the Saints, who are facing cap constraints, acquiring a player like Young could provide a cost-effective solution to their edge rushing needs.
Young’s Potential Move to the Saints
With the New Orleans Saints actively seeking edge rushers this offseason, adding Young to their roster would be a logical choice. Teams signing Young are hopeful that he can return to the form he displayed in his rookie season with the Washington Commanders, prior to his ACL injury. Although his production has dipped since then, Young still managed to record 7.5 sacks last season.
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz identifies Young as the ideal fit for the Saints, highlighting the team’s urgent need for an edge rusher. Despite their financial constraints, the Saints have a history of making strategic moves in free agency. Young’s potential one-year contract would allow him to play alongside Cameron Jordan and prove that he still possesses the talent that led to his high draft selection in 2020.
Similar to the successful pairing of Young with Nick Bosa in San Francisco, joining forces with Jordan in New Orleans could lead to similar success for Young.
Commanders’ Decision to Trade Young
The decision by the Washington Commanders to trade Young last season appears to have been justified, given the current offseason developments. With Young attracting significant interest from other teams, it’s evident that the Commanders’ rebuild process aligns with his desire for a fresh start elsewhere. While the Saints may not be immediate Super Bowl contenders, they offer Young the opportunity to compete in meaningful games, particularly in the NFC South.
Although Young’s tenure with the Commanders ended on a challenging note, his upcoming move presents a new opportunity for him to showcase his abilities and contribute to a new team’s success.
