“49ers Bolster Defense with Acquisition of Maliek Collins from Texans”
The San Francisco 49ers are making significant moves to strengthen their defensive line, with the acquisition of defensive tackle Maliek Collins from the Houston Texans in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick. The trade is pending Collins passing a physical examination, according to a source familiar with the transaction who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Collins’ addition is part of the 49ers’ efforts to overhaul their defensive line, which began with agreements to sign free agent defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, as well as defensive tackle Jordan Elliott. These deals, though not officially signed, are aimed at addressing the team’s needs on defense, particularly with several key players hitting free agency and others facing potential releases.
The 49ers are expected to part ways with Arik Armstead to free up salary cap space. In Collins, they acquire a seasoned player with impressive statistics, including five sacks in the previous season and a strong pass rush win rate.
The 29-year-old Collins has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, and most recently the Houston Texans. His contract with the 49ers includes base salaries of $8 million and $9.5 million over the next two seasons.
In addition to the defensive line upgrades, the 49ers have also made adjustments to retain All-Pro fullback Kyle Juszczyk, restructuring his contract to create $1.75 million in salary cap relief. Juszczyk, a vital component of the team’s offense, has consistently earned Pro Bowl honors and remains an integral part of coach Kyle Shanahan’s plans.
The 49ers’ defensive makeover aims to address weaknesses from the previous season and build a formidable unit under new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen. With key acquisitions like Collins and strategic contract adjustments, the team is positioning itself for success in the upcoming season.
