“Cascading Changes: 49ers Revamp Defense with Kendricks Signing and Collins Trade”
The San Francisco 49ers are making significant changes to their defense this offseason, starting with the dismissal of coordinator Steve Wilks and transitioning to a focus on personnel adjustments. As the new league year kicks off, the 49ers are poised to execute multiple transactions, including the signing of linebacker Eric Kendricks and the acquisition of defensive tackle Maliek Collins.
These moves come on the heels of two-year agreements with defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, as well as defensive tackle Jordan Elliott. Kendricks, signing a one-year deal, is expected to provide depth at linebacker, especially with Dre Greenlaw recovering from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in the Super Bowl.
Collins, an eight-year veteran, is set to join the 49ers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, according to ESPN. His addition, along with Elliott’s, aims to offset the potential departure of Arik Armstead and address concerns with the team’s run defense, particularly in short-yardage situations.
The defensive overhaul coincides with the promotion of Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator, though the official announcement is pending. Offensively, the 49ers have made headlines with the departure of backup quarterback Sam Darnold to the Minnesota Vikings and the restructuring of fullback Kyle Juszczyk’s contract, resulting in salary cap relief.
While the 49ers’ defense was solid overall last season, improvements are needed, particularly in run defense. Kendricks, a Clovis native and UCLA alum, brings a wealth of experience and accolades, including an All-Pro and Pro Bowl season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019.
His connection with former Chargers coach Brandon Staley, now on the 49ers’ staff, adds another layer of familiarity to the team. Additionally, Kendricks’ career tackles rank among the top active players, highlighting his consistency and impact on the field.
As the 49ers continue to make roster moves, including the expected release of Armstead, they are focused on addressing key areas of need and building a formidable defense for the upcoming season. With Kendricks and Collins set to join the team, along with other potential acquisitions, the 49ers are primed to make a statement on defense in the coming year.
