NFL RUMORS: What Mike Tomlin Allegedly Told Kenny Pickett, Prompting QB’s Steelers Trade Demand
The Kenny Pickett era in Pittsburgh has come to a close as the Steelers traded the quarterback to the Philadelphia Eagles, ending his two-year stint with the franchise. But what led to this departure?
It’s evident that Pickett wasn’t performing as expected as the QB1, which likely influenced the Steelers’ decision to sign Russell Wilson earlier in the week. However, what prompted the young quarterback to request a trade? According to insider Tom Pelissero, there’s a significant reason behind it:
“What caused this unexpected turn? Allegedly, Mike Tomlin assured Kenny Pickett of a chance to compete. Pickett reportedly learned about the Russell Wilson signing via social media on Sunday night. When they spoke the next morning, Tomlin informed Pickett that Wilson would be given priority and would receive the initial reps. Consequently, Pickett requested a trade. And now, he finds himself in Philadelphia.”
Kenny Pickett’s Trade Demand: A Rational Move
It’s completely understandable from Pickett’s perspective. While he may not be vying for the QB1 position in Philadelphia alongside Jalen Hurts, it’s comprehensible why the former Pitt standout would be displeased. He was the focal point for the Steelers, and suddenly found himself relegated. Such a situation would naturally leave anyone feeling discontent.
Once again, it’s improbable that Kenny Pickett will receive substantial playing time with the Eagles. Nonetheless, it represents a fresh start for him. Last season, the quarterback appeared in 12 games, accumulating 2,070 passing yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. Pickett maintained a completion rate of just 62 percent.
Overall, across two NFL seasons, Pickett has participated in 25 games, completing 62.6 percent of his passes, with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Admittedly, these stats are not exceptional, especially considering the Steelers were seeking a successor to Ben Roethlisberger who could sustain their competitiveness.
With Wilson, Pittsburgh acquires an experienced quarterback who exhibited improvements last season in Denver. It remains to be seen whether Wilson will outperform Pickett’s performance in the Black and Gold uniform.
