Among the Steelers’ moves in free agency was trading wide receiver Dionte Johnson, while adding Russell Wilson and acquiring Justin Fields. With several new faces on the offensive lineup, including wide receivers Quez Watkins and Van Jefferson, the Steelers’ offense will see significant changes in 2024.
Currently, the Steelers face a void at receiver following Johnson’s departure. They may address this gap by signing a top free agent like Tyler Boyd, drafting a standout receiver, or relying on a committee approach behind George Pickens.
Running Backs
The Steelers’ running back duo in 2023 combined for over 1,800 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Expectations are for both Najee Harris and Warren to see increased roles in 2024. With Harris aiming for a 1,200-yard season, Warren is projected to contribute with over 800 yards if both remain healthy.
Russell Wilson
Wilson is poised to start for the Steelers in Week 1, although a competition with Justin Fields is expected during training camp. Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, known for his emphasis on the run game and play action, Wilson’s passing yardage may see a slight decrease. Anticipate around 3,400 passing yards and 28 touchdowns for Wilson if he plays the entire season.
Steelers Wide Receivers
Despite mediocre quarterback play in 2023, George Pickens surpassed 1,100 receiving yards. With Johnson’s departure, Pickens is primed for a standout season in 2024, targeting approximately 1,300 yards and over eight touchdowns. Tight end Pat Freiermuth is expected to play a more prominent role, contributing around 600 yards and a couple of touchdowns.
With the receiving corps mainly comprising deep-threat players, expect Calvin Austin to lead in playing time, aiming for around 500 receiving yards and multiple touchdowns. Quez Watkins and Van Jefferson could each surpass 500 yards, with Jefferson likely receiving more targets due to his size. Combined, Watkins and Jefferson are projected to accumulate around 500 yards and several touchdowns.
If all goes as planned, the Steelers offense in 2024 could rank among the top 10 in the league, possibly leading to postseason success. For more updates on the Pittsburgh Steelers, follow me on X @ChaseGrimm28. For additional football content, visit Gridiron Heroics.
