Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice is renowned as one of the greatest players in NFL history, particularly excelling as a wide receiver. Throughout his illustrious career, Rice had the privilege of playing alongside exceptional quarterbacks, including Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jeff Garcia during his tenure with the 49ers.
When asked about his favorite quarterback to play with, Rice shared his thoughts on the “All Facts No Brakes” podcast with former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Rice expressed his fondness for Joe Montana, highlighting the exceptional chemistry they shared on the field.
“Joe Montana and I, we had such chemistry man,” Rice recalled. “Then you had Steve Young come along, and I was able to put up outstanding numbers with Steve Young. Through all the quarterbacks I went through, I was able to adjust to their strengths.”
Reflecting on his time with the 49ers, Rice emphasized the remarkable connection he had with Montana, making him his preferred choice among the quarterbacks he played with.
Rice’s career flourished during his partnership with Montana and Young. Beginning in 1985, Rice thrived under Montana’s leadership, contributing to the 49ers’ success and achieving remarkable milestones together. One standout moment was their triumph in Super Bowl XXIII, where Rice delivered a stellar performance, clinching the Super Bowl MVP award with an extraordinary display of receiving prowess.
Even after Young assumed the quarterback role in 1991, Rice continued to excel, leading the league in receiving yards multiple times and adding another Super Bowl victory to his illustrious career. Notably, Rice’s statistical peak occurred during the 1995 season, setting an NFL single-season receiving yards record that stood for nearly two decades.
While Rice achieved greatness with both Montana and Young, he ultimately leans towards Montana as his preferred quarterback, citing their exceptional chemistry and shared success on the field.
