San Francisco 49ers Still Upset Over Super Bowl Practice Conditions Potentially Leading to Dre Greenlaw’s Injury
During the lead-up to Super Bowl LVIII against the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers found themselves practicing at a nearby UNLV football field, a standard arrangement for visiting teams. While the Chiefs enjoyed the amenities of the Las Vegas Raiders’ facility as the designated home team, the 49ers were assigned to the local college football fields at UNLV.
However, the field conditions at UNLV were less than ideal, described as “spongy,” making it challenging for players to make precise movements, particularly when planting their cleats. Despite the suboptimal conditions, the 49ers had the option to improve the field by bringing in new sod or requesting a change of venue. At the time, head coach Kyle Shanahan downplayed concerns, stating, “I’m not worried about it at all. It is what it is. We’re here. We won’t change anything.”
Fast forward to after the Super Bowl, where the 49ers suffered a defeat against the Chiefs and witnessed several players sustain significant injuries, including linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who tore his Achilles tendon while running onto the field. Another casualty was defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, who also suffered a torn Achilles while celebrating a rookie interception.
Months later, reflecting on the events leading up to the Super Bowl, Coach Shanahan’s perspective has shifted. When asked about the practice fields and their potential role in the injuries, Shanahan expressed frustration but refrained from delving into specifics, acknowledging the lingering frustration over the situation.
Despite the disappointment and hindsight, Shanahan remains focused on moving forward. While the circumstances surrounding the injuries are frustrating, dwelling on the past controversies serves little purpose, as nothing can be changed now. Nonetheless, Shanahan’s lingering frustration underscores the significance of practice conditions and player safety, prompting further reflection on preparation protocols in the future.
