Yankees’ traded lefty faces setback with Dodgers DFA
Recently traded from the Yankees to the Dodgers, a left-handed reliever finds himself back at square one after being designated for assignment (DFA). Initially seen as a clever move by the Yankees, acquiring him during the offseason, Matt Gage’s journey has been far from stable. Despite being part of the Dodgers’ bullpen plan, his tenure with the team proved short-lived, as he was DFA’d once again to make room for another player.
Gage’s transfer from the Yankees to the Dodgers occurred in a trade involving Caleb Ferguson, aimed at balancing both teams’ rosters. However, instead of getting a chance to showcase his skills in the Dodgers’ bullpen, Gage found himself on the move again, this time to accommodate the arrival of outfielder Taylor Trammell.
Despite his limited opportunities, Gage has shown promise in his brief MLB career, displaying an ability to induce swings and misses despite lacking a standout fastball. With impressive statistics, including a career ERA of 1.83 and 20 strikeouts in just under 20 innings, Gage’s potential hasn’t gone unnoticed, even though teams have repeatedly passed on retaining him.
As Gage faces uncertainty once again, speculation arises about his future destination. Perhaps a return to the Yankees, who recently took a chance on another unheralded pitcher, or even a reunion with the Astros or Blue Jays could be on the cards. Regardless, Gage’s journey reflects the unpredictable nature of professional baseball, where players often find themselves navigating through tumultuous offseasons and uncertain futures.
