Golf Enthusiasts Excited Over Tiger Woods’ Strong Start as Australian Golfers Struggle Early at the Masters
Tiger Woods has silenced his critics by starting the Masters with a solid score of -1 after 13 holes, while several prominent Australian golfers struggled on the first day in challenging conditions. LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau excelled, finishing the day with an impressive -7, ahead of fellow American Scottie Scheffler.
Among the Australian golfers, Cam Davis performed the best, ending the day with a score of -3, just four shots behind the American leader. Cameron Smith managed to navigate the tough conditions to finish with a -1, keeping up with the pack on a challenging day on the greens. However, most attention was on 15-time major winner Woods, who completed the day’s play with a double bogey.
Woods expressed confidence before the tournament, stating his determination to break Jack Nicklaus’ record as the oldest champion, despite his limited playtime and daily physical aches from past career-threatening injuries. “If everything aligns, I believe I can win one more,” Woods stated.
He put himself in a good position early on with a -1 finish before play was suspended due to a delayed start on Thursday. Woods began the day with a birdie and showed strong performance on the fairway.
His short game was exceptional, saving himself from the bunker on the 10th hole with a skilled chip onto the green for par. Fans cheered for Woods, who had not played since the Genesis Open in February.
The conditions at Augusta were wet and windy, challenging many Australian golfers. Jason Day and former champion Adam Scott both finished even with the course par. Day, who played alongside Woods, managed to rally with birdies on the eighth and 10th holes, finishing even and staying close to the leaders.
Regrettably, promising Australian golfer Min Woo Lee must battle to make the halfway cut after ending with a two-over score of 74. Lee faced a tough lead-up to the tournament, having played with the flu and recovering from a broken finger caused by a dumbbell accident last week.
Smith was also dealing with difficult circumstances, including being unwell before the Masters, yet managed to finish with a score of -1.
