On April 14, several notable moments have occurred in the history of the Masters tournament: One of them is Woods Secures Green Jackets No. 3 and 5
Let’s take a quick tour to historic moments…
In 1968, Bob Goalby recorded a final-round score of 66, thanks to birdies on holes 13 and 14, and an eagle on hole 15. He was expected to face Roberto De Vicenzo in a playoff, but De Vicenzo’s incorrect scorecard, which mistakenly showed a 4 instead of a birdie 3 on hole 17, altered the outcome.
In 1974, Gary Player earned a two-stroke victory over Dave Stockton and Tom Weiskopf after a brilliant 9-iron shot on hole 17 allowed him to make a birdie. This marked Player’s second win at Augusta National.
In 1985, Bernhard Langer secured victory with rounds of 68-68 over the weekend, becoming the third international champion of the tournament. Curtis Strange, Seve Ballesteros, and Raymond Floyd tied for second place.
In 1991, Ian Woosnam claimed his first major title after an exciting competition against Jose Maria Olazabal and Tom Watson.
In 1996, Nick Faldo executed a final-round comeback, starting the day six strokes behind Greg Norman. Faldo’s low round of 67 and Norman’s 78 led to Faldo’s third green jacket victory, winning by five strokes.
In 2002, Tiger Woods maintained his lead after a third-round score of 66, capturing his third Masters title. He became the third player to successfully defend his title, joining Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo. Woods set a record for the lowest 72-hole score by a defending champion, with a total of 12-under-par 276.
In 2013, Adam Scott made history by becoming the first Australian to win the green jacket, defeating Angel Cabrera in a two-hole playoff.
In 2019, Tiger Woods made a memorable comeback 14 years after his fourth Masters win, claiming his fifth green jacket and his first major title in 11 years. At 43 years old, Woods became the second-oldest Masters champion and ranks behind only Jack Nicklaus, who has six green jackets.
