Tiger Woods faced one of the most challenging days of his career at the Masters on Saturday, shooting his worst round ever in a major championship. Woods finished the third round with a 10-over 82, leaving him well off the pace and heading into his 100th round at the Masters on Sunday without the spotlight on him.
After missing a birdie putt on the third green, Woods’ day took a turn for the worse. He struggled with his swing and putting, enduring a series of bogeys and double-bogeys that marred his performance. Woods’ final score was his worst round as a professional at a major tournament, eclipsing his previous low of 78 in the 2022 Masters.
“I didn’t have a great warm-up session, and it continued throughout the day,” Woods said. His previous worst rounds at the Masters were back-to-back 78s in 2022.
Woods described his game as hitting the ball to all the wrong spots. Starting the day 1-over and seven shots off the lead, he was aiming to make a run at leaders like Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau. However, his round featured eight bogeys and two double-bogeys, with only two birdies in between.
This round marked only the fifth time Woods has scored in the 80s as a professional, and just the third instance in a major. He shot an 80 in the first round of the 2005 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay and an 81 in the third round of the 2002 British Open at Muirfield. His worst round overall was an 85 in the third round of the 2015 Memorial.
Woods acknowledged his lack of competitive play this year, having only played 24 holes of competitive golf before the Masters. Despite opportunities to turn things around, he couldn’t capitalize on them. Woods admitted that poor play from the trees and putting errors hurt his performance.
After a series of missteps on the front nine, including double bogeys at the seventh and eighth holes, Woods continued to struggle on the back nine with bogeys at holes 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17.
Playing partner Tyrrell Hatton empathized with Woods’ challenges, citing the difficulty of the course’s fast greens. Even short putts posed a challenge due to the greens’ speed and slope.
Despite his difficult week, Woods managed to make the cut for the 24th consecutive time at the Masters, tying a record. He played 23 holes on Friday due to weather-related interruptions and shot a respectable 72 in the second round.
Through the first two rounds, Woods had driven the ball well, hitting 22 of 28 fairways. However, his third round saw him struggle with only four fairways hit out of 13, as well as two three-putts.
Woods plans to rely on his team to prepare him for Sunday’s early tee time. “My team will get me ready,” he said. “It will be a long night and a long warm-up session, but we’ll be ready.”
