“He’s been manhandled” – Justin Longmuir calls for AFL probe over Fremantle Dockers star who has been mistreated all season
Fremantle Dockers’ coach, Justin Longmuir, has called for an AFL investigation into the treatment of one of his star players, Jye Amiss, throughout the season. Longmuir expressed his concerns after a controversial incident involving Amiss in the final minutes of Fremantle’s match against Richmond.
During an off-ball situation, defender Ben Miller made contact with Amiss, causing him to fall to the ground with Miller’s knee on his neck. Despite the collision, Miller avoided suspension, and Amiss was awarded a free kick, which led to his second goal of the game. Longmuir criticized the league’s handling of the situation and emphasized the need for better protection for players like Amiss, particularly after his recent concussion.
Longmuir highlighted that Amiss, being lighter framed and young, has been subjected to rough treatment by opposition defenders throughout the season. He called for umpires to provide better protection for players like Amiss to prevent career-ending injuries and engage with the AFL on the matter.
Despite the controversy, Fremantle secured a dominant win over Richmond, with Josh Treacy scoring a career-high four goals and midfielders Hayden Young and Caleb Serong delivering standout performances. Luke Ryan also impressed with a career-high 39 disposals in defence.
The match wasn’t without its drama, as a scuffle broke out in the final minutes, resulting in fines for several players from both teams. Despite this, Fremantle’s victory propelled them to sixth place in the standings, marking their biggest win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground since 2015.
Overall, Longmuir’s call for better player protection highlights the ongoing debate around player welfare and safety in the AFL, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to prevent unnecessary rough play and ensure the longevity of players’ careers.
